I have a six year old girl. Although the marketing of Hasbro's Martian Matter Alien Maker seems to lean towards boys, she really wanted this toy. So we finally caved and she is now the proud owner of the Martian Matter Alien Maker spaceship. What you receive when you buy it is a set of 14 half molds that you combine to make a custom made alien. from there you click the two halves together and push them into a playdoh base that creates an indent of the alien. The child fills the indent with a gel/goo compound and tops it with another layer of playdoh and a few minutes later you have a gel alien! The aliens are around an inch and a half tall and if you keep them in their space bubbles they won't dry out for a few days.
We have had this toy now for a few months and my daughter still enjoys using it! It encourages the child to be creative and use their imagination. The age recommendation of 5 and up is right on. I would think that kids right up to 10 or 11 would still be entertained with it. Children under 3 should not use it due to the small parts and choking hazards. It can be quite messy and so a drop cloth should be used. The gel/goo compound is brightly coloured and can stain some surfaces.
Overall, a fun product I would recommend. I give it 4.5 out of 5 (half a point docked for messiness)
